Pepe (ticker PEPE) is an Ethereum memecoin launched in April 2023 and named after Pepe the Frog, the character Matt Furie created in his 2005 comic Boy's Club.[1] It passed $1 billion in market cap within weeks, and $11 billion in December 2024.[2][3]

Lore[edit]

PEPE has no official connection to Furie or his character.[1] The same comic features Brett, the character behind the Base token Brett. PEPE's supply is about 420 trillion tokens, all in circulation.[3]

Binance opened PEPE trading in its innovation zone on 5 May 2023, when the token's market cap crossed $1 billion. Its listing note said there were signs that "certain insiders or team members" bought 7% of supply shortly after launch.[2] On 13 November 2024 Robinhood listed PEPE and Coinbase added it to its listing roadmap with the aim of listing it that day; the price rose more than 30% within an hour.[4] Binance.US listed it in early December 2024.[3] On 7 December 2024 PEPE passed Uniswap's UNI in market cap at above $11 billion, about 18 times its value at the start of the year.[3]

Timeline[edit]

  • 2023-04-14: first Uniswap pair opens[5]
  • 2023-05-05: Binance spot listing; market cap above $1 billion[2]
  • 2023-05-11: Coinbase apologises for a newsletter that described the Pepe meme as a hate symbol[1]
  • 2023-08-24: about 16 trillion PEPE move from the team multisig to exchanges[6]
  • 2023-08-26: the remaining team member says three former members took the tokens[7]
  • 2024-11-13: Robinhood listing; Coinbase adds PEPE to its roadmap[4]
  • 2024-12-07: passes UNI in market cap at above $11 billion[3]

Key wallets[edit]

  • Team multisig: on 24 August 2023 about 16 trillion tokens, about 3.8% of supply, went to OKX (about $8.2 million), Binance ($6.5 million), Bybit ($434,000) and an unknown wallet, after the approval threshold was cut from five-of-eight to two-of-eight signatures.[6] About 10 trillion tokens remained, which the remaining signer said would rest "until a use or burn arises".[7]

Controversies[edit]

The August 2023 transfers sent PEPE down about 15% and raised fears of a rug pull.[6] The remaining team member said three former members had taken about $15 million of tokens and then deleted their social accounts.[7]

In May 2023 a Coinbase newsletter described Pepe the Frog as "co-opted as a hate symbol by alt-right groups". After #DeleteCoinbase trended on Twitter, chief legal officer Paul Grewal posted "We screwed up and we are sorry." Furie, who won a 2019 settlement against Infowars over use of the character, has no role in the token.[1]
