Justin Sun is a China-born crypto entrepreneur and the founder of the Tron blockchain. In memecoins he is known for launching SunPump, a Tron launchpad, in 2024 and for becoming the largest known holder of TRUMP in 2025.[1][2][3]
Background[edit]
Reuters describes Sun as a China-born crypto entrepreneur. He is an adviser to World Liberty Financial, the crypto venture tied to the Trump family, and its second-largest known investor.[1] In March 2023 the US SEC charged him and three related companies, including the Tron Foundation, with unregistered sales of the TRX and BTT tokens. It also accused him of wash trading TRX and of paying celebrities to promote the tokens without disclosure.[4]
Notable trades[edit]
SunPump
- 2024-08: Sun introduced SunPump, which billed itself as the "first meme fair launch platform" and was positioned as Tron's rival to Solana's pump.fun. The team marketed it as having no rug pulls and no team allocation, and Sun set aside $10 million for an incentive program for SunPump coins.[2]
- 2024-08-15: SUNDOG launched and became Tron's flagship memecoin. It peaked at a $325 million market cap, and Decrypt compared its rise to dogwifhat. Dune data cited by Decrypt showed more than 11,000 tokens created on SunPump within its first week.[2]
Comedian
- 2024-11-20: Sun bought Maurizio Cattelan's banana artwork "Comedian" for $6.24 million at Sotheby's in New York. He called it "a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes and the cryptocurrency community".[5]
- After his bid was confirmed, the largest unaffiliated Solana memecoin themed on the artwork, BAN, fell 37%. Its market cap dropped from nearly $241 million to a low of $151 million.[5]
TRUMP
- 2025-05: before a gala dinner hosted by President Trump for top TRUMP holders, Sun said he held more of the token than anyone else, nearly $19 million worth.[3]
- 2025-07-07: Tron DAO said TRUMP would launch on Tron.[3]
- 2025-07-09: Sun posted "We are committed to buying $100 million of TRUMP", with the token trading at $8.89.[3]
World Liberty Financial
- 2024-11: weeks after the US election, Sun bought $30 million of World Liberty Financial (WLFI) tokens. He was then named an adviser and later raised his stake to $75 million.[3]
Controversies[edit]
WLFI freeze
- 2025-09-04: WLFI's "guardian address" blacklisted a wallet owned by Sun holding about 545 million tokens, according to blockchain data reported by Reuters. Before that, Sun had moved 50 million tokens to another address, per a Nansen analyst.[1]
- Sun posted that his tokens were "unreasonably frozen" and asked for them to be unlocked. World Liberty did not name him; it said it does not seek to blacklist anyone and acts when alerted to malicious or high-risk activity.[1]
SEC case
- 2025-07-09: lawyers for the SEC, Sun and his companies jointly asked the court to stay the case.[3]
- 2026-03-05: under a Final Judgment in the Southern District of New York, the SEC dismissed its claims against Sun, the Tron Foundation and the BitTorrent Foundation. Rainberry, formerly BitTorrent Inc., agreed to pay a $10 million civil penalty. The defendants neither admitted nor denied the allegations, and The Block reported that the court still had to approve the judgment.[4]
