**Samoyedcoin** (ticker **SAMO**) is a dog-themed [[Solana]] memecoin launched in April 2021, which bills itself as the first memecoin on Solana.[^1][^2]

## Lore
SAMO launched with an airdrop of 1 million tokens to 2,000 early community members.[^1][^2] Its founders use the pseudonyms smsl and Hot Onion.[^2] Decrypt described it as inspired by Dogecoin, Sam Bankman-Fried and Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko.[^3] The project calls itself Solana's ambassador and has pursued community and onboarding work rather than pure memes.[^1]

The original maximum supply was 14 billion SAMO. Burns completed in 2022 removed 54%, leaving a fixed maximum of 4.746 billion.[^1] The project set up SamoDAO, funded with 100 million SAMO, and later airdropped SAMO to Saga Genesis holders.[^1] Centralised listings include Kraken, Gate.io and OKX.[^2]

SAMO's main run came in October 2021, when it rose 2,388% in the month, from about $0.0056 to $0.139.[^3] It predates the later Solana dog coins [[Bonk]], [[Myro]] and [[dogwifhat]].
