**Brett** (ticker **BRETT**), also called Based Brett, is a memecoin on [[Base]], the Coinbase-incubated Ethereum layer 2, launched in February 2024. It is named after Brett, a character in [[Matt Furie]]'s comic *Boy's Club*, and calls itself "Pepe's best friend on Base".[^1][^2] In June 2024 it became the first Base memecoin to reach a $1 billion market cap.[^1] ## Lore Furie's *Boy's Club* is also the source of Pepe the Frog, the character behind [[Pepe]].[^2] BRETT fell to under 3 cents in late April 2024, then rose about 130% in the two weeks before 3 June 2024, when CoinGecko data put its market cap peak at about $1.24 billion. At that point its top 30 holders held just under 39% of supply, against 46% for the top 30 holders of [[Bonk]].[^1] Binance announced a USD-margined perpetual futures contract for BRETT on 20 August 2024, and the token rose 36% in early trading that day, when [[dogwifhat]] also gained over 9%.[^3] Binance.US opened spot trading on the Base network on 31 July 2025.[^4] ## Timeline - 2024-02-27: main Uniswap pool opens on Base[^5] - 2024-06-03: Unchained reports the first $1 billion market cap for a Base memecoin, peaking near $1.24 billion[^1] - 2024-08-20: Binance announces BRETT perpetual futures[^3] - 2025-07-31: Binance.US listing[^4] ## Key wallets - Deployer: held over 9% of supply in June 2024.[^1] ## Controversies In April 2024 a user posting as @artibian_maxi argued that BRETT was not a fair launch, saying Etherscan data showed that "during the first hour after the launch only whitelisted addresses could buy". A day later @shady_oak1 claimed that "insiders were holding over 81% of the supply before most people could buy".[^1] ## See also - [[Mog Coin]] - [[Neiro]] - [[Turbo]] - [[SPX6900]] - [[Kekius Maximus]] - [[Fwog]] ## References 1.
