Editing Billy

**Billy** (ticker **BILLY**) is a [[Solana]] dog memecoin launched on [[pump.fun]] in early June 2024 whose developer sold out within 20 minutes and later abandoned it. It is a widely cited example of a [[Community takeover|community takeover]] (CTO), and peaked at about $215 million in market cap.[^1][^2]

## Lore
The developer sold all their tokens within 20 minutes of launch, most of them in one sale for $1,116, a stake Decrypt valued at about $6 million in early July 2024.[^2] As the coin grew, the developer used it to promote new tokens and threatened to delete the project's social accounts. Within hours the community made a new Telegram group, X account and website and updated the [[DEX Screener]] page to point to them.[^1] The CTO grew to as many as 100 people in marketing and social media roles; the X account had 11,000 followers by late July 2024 and posters appeared in New York.[^1]

On 1–2 July 2024 Billy rose 97% to about $117 million, making it the second-largest pump.fun token behind [[Michi]] ($130 million) and ahead of [[Daddy Tate|DADDY]] ($71 million).[^2] Attackers changed its DEX Screener banner to show another coin's dog before the community reclaimed the page, and copycats such as Billy2, Billy3 and "Fuck Billy" launched on pump.fun.[^2] By 29 July 2024 Decrypt called Billy the largest memecoin launched on pump.fun, with a peak of $215 million.[^1]
